Facts about Fishers, Indiana
Located in Hamilton County, Fishers is a city found within the Fall Creek and Delaware townships. With a population of more than 95,000, the city is considered a suburb of Indianapolis. Much of the growth has taken place in the last three decades.
The first settler to the area was William Conner. In 1802, he established a home in the area and named it Conner Prairie. More settlers came to the area, ensuring that the community was firmly established by the time Indiana became a state in 1816. Conner served as an interpreter for Chief William Anderson during the negotiations that led to the Treaty of St. Mary’s, which declared that the Delaware Tribe relinquished all rights to land in Ohio and Indiana.
The establishment of Indianapolis as the new state capital in 1825 paved the way for more growth in the community. Along with more people, a number of businesses moved into the area. The advent of the railroad led to renaming the community Fishers Switch, a name that would endure until 1908. At that time, the community became Fisher. The town would officially become a city in 2015.
Affordable housing, continued economic growth, and and emphasis on cultural and recreational opportunities helped to fuel the surge in population that began in the early 1990s. Today, Fisher is known as one of the most desirable suburbs in the Indianapolis metro area.
